BarOQUE
Francisco Chamorro has been working on the baroque theme for 10 years. His works are influenced by his favorite artists. He uses and investigates the light and ambiance of the baroque from dutch artists such as Johannes Vermeer, and Jan Van Eyck. Develops the movement and the instant capture of Italian artists like Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, The expression, the sensationalism and portraiture of Spain´s gold age artists Zurbaran, José de Ribera, and Diego de Velazquez.
His main body of work has focused on representations of biblical acts and the lives and works of saints.
The baroque movement is not a passivo one, its ever evolving, In Europe we saw that different artists added to mix. In the Americas the movement was recreated and enriched by local imagery. Francisco ´s main influence is this new baroque. This heady mix of sensationalism, lights, mirrors, hypereal statues and the use of materials that created the same visual effect which imitate the orginal material and are not have all greatly influenced Francisco´s body of work. In his works nothing is by chance, everything has been designed and produced; the sets, wardrobe, frames, collages, jewellery, and lighting.
They are presented in 3 parts that correspond in a series.
The order of the presentation will be:
Part one presents “Altars”, originally assembled with a mix of objects, photos, and iconic Roman Catholic characters. The artist's idea is to immerse the visitor in the imagery of the religious images and to expose the deception with the sacred. The artist emphasizes the mystification based on the illusion that a saint or religious icon bestows security to the person who prays to it. These altars are reflect the definition of Baroque; light effects, staged on scene, to place the visitor in a certain "climate" although “everything" is an illusion.
The second part has to do with the masochism woven into religion.
It is exemplified by characters who all committed a severe act, or a murder influenced by a "divine" mandate.
The question proposed by the artist is, how can a human being reach this point?.
He examines the dichotomy between fear/inflicted pain and the pleasure/ecstasy they experienced. The reason for good and the divine. Martyers possessed with a certain “influence”.
The third part refers to the mass-marketing of religious objects, sold in a multitude of copies as if they were sacred.
This standardization condemns what we could call objectification of the sacred and game playing of those who believe in those objects as if they were the sacred Gods themselves. This is related to the belief of the magic power and give to these objects power of protection that have nothing to do with reality.
